Prepare your layers, hockey fans. The season’s premier outdoor event is just around the corner.

The Bruins and Penguins were to square off at Fenway Park for the 14th iteration of the New Year’s celebrations, which was marked the return of the 2023 Winter Classic to Boston.

Since the event’s inception ahead of the 2007-08 season, the outdoor game has been played every season in the NHL. The only exception was in 2021 when the delayed start to the season prevented the NHL from hosting the Winter Classic.

The Winter Classic was held on New Year’s Day this year, as in previous years. Because the holiday falls on a Sunday, the game started on Monday, January 2.

It’s the third time the NHL has pushed back the Winter Classic by one day because New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday.

The Participants of Winter Classic 2023

The Bruins took on the Penguins in this year’s game. Boston was making its fourth Winter Classic appearance and hosting the event for the third time. Previously, the Bruins played in 2010, 2016, and 2019.

The Bruins are 2-1-0 in their previous three games, defeating the Flyers in 2010, the Blackhawks in 2019, and the Canadians in 2016.

The Penguins, who took part in the inaugural Winter Classic in 2008, are competing in their third Winter Classic. Pittsburgh took part in the outdoor festivities for the first time since 2011.

The Penguins are 1-1-0 all-time in the Winter Classic, having won the first one in 2008 against the Sabres and losing to the Capitals in 2011.

Match Overview

The Penguins had a big breakaway early in the game, but were unable to realize it until Kasperi Kapanen scored a point in the second period. Linus Ullmark played well in goal for the Bruins, making several great saves in the first period.

In the third period, the lead began to swing as the Bruins began to create more frequent shots on their opponent’s backline. Jake DeBrusk tied the game with seconds left on the power play off a Brad Marchand pass, and 2:24 later he gave Boston the lead after a great assist from Taylor Hall.
