In fulfilling its primary purpose, VirtualShield VPN enables users to connect to servers in different locations, enhancing online privacy and enabling access to otherwise restricted content. It boasts commendable download speeds, although the exact number of available servers remains somewhat unclear.

The VPN offers user-friendly applications for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, along with extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. While the Linux app is currently in beta, VirtualShield VPN can be manually installed on various devices like Android SmartTVs, Chromebooks, Kodi Boxes, Fire Stick/Fire TV, and Nvidia Shield. It is also compatible with Roku devices and gaming consoles, albeit only through a computer using a Crossover cable. Notably, VirtualShield does not support router installations.

While the mobile apps and browser extensions received ratings between 3-4 stars, none of them undergo regular updates. For instance, the iOS app has not seen an update for over three years as of the current writing.

Privacy and encryption

In safeguarding your privacy, VirtualShield utilizes the L2TP and OpenVPN UDP/TCP connection protocols. However, the details regarding the encryption algorithm remain undisclosed, as our inquiry to customer support went unanswered.

For Windows users, a manual activation is required to access the kill switch feature, terminating internet access upon VPN connection loss. The app further offers App Guard, an extension of the kill switch, automatically terminating an application if the VPN connection is disrupted.

Despite being based in the US, VirtualShield VPN appears to permit torrenting.
